Britney Spears – “I Wanna Go” Video Review

So here comes a fresh slice of Britney. “I Wanna Go” is the latest single to be released from her “Femme Fatale” album; while not one of my personal favourites, it’s a solid pop number from a consistently high quality pop album. For the video, Britney has utilised her relationship with the Press as a source of inspiration, which isn’t entirely new territory for her as she did something similar for the single, “Piece of Me” (from the “Blackout” album), however this video is cheekier in tone and Britney seems to be having fun in it, rather than being reminiscent of a drugged-up, performing animal, like she has of late.

"Fuuuuuck you!"

The video opens with Britney attending a press conference, shooting down tabloid rumours being shouted out by the gathered throng of journalists, that is until she snaps and tells everyone to go have some sexy-time with themselves (“fuck you!”); in fact, that’s pretty much the tone of this entire video summed up in two words. She leaves the aforementioned press conference, hitting the streets in an outfit that is a lot more flattering than previous video outfits; the red, Latex Onesie with accompanying sensible black shoes from “Oops! I Did It Again“, anyone?

blah, blah, blah, what a nice pair, yadda, yadda, yadda

An interesting thing about her outfit I did notice was her top (above). While this video is clearly predominantly about flipping the bird to the paparazzi, Britney is wearing a top with a design that appears to be a head with a pair of Mickey Mouse ears on it; this is obviously subverting the fact that many moons ago, pre the head shave & her multiple failed marriages, Britney was an innocent little Mouseketeer on “The Mickey Mouse Club”.

"I won't regret this...I doubt anyone will even remember me doing it"

During her stint on the street, Britney then proceeds to goose a fan, flash a kid, shag a police man and then, naturally, take down a swarm of robot paparazzi with her microphone in scenes that are a cross between “Terminator” and “Kill Bill“.

<insert obvious pun about Hit Me Baby One More Time...>

After clearly reaching the conclusion that the shit was about to hit the fan, Britney hops in a car driven by her manager and they proceed to make a hasty get away. While buzzing along, her manager decides to have a drink of milk, though clearly he’s never drunk out the carton before as he cocks it up big time (disclaimer: this is quite likely a reference to a film or advert that I don’t get or know. Alternatively it could just be something extremely random). The upshot is that, uh-oh, girl, you be in trouble! THE MANAGER’S ONLY A SODDING ROBOT AS WELL!

Britney's expression, "mmm, oh yeah, baby, that's the good shit."

Unsurprisingly, it turns out to be a dream. As the song ends the video cuts back to Britney at the press conference, who clearly didn’t tell the bunch of hacks to do one; more’s the pity. Just before the video actually ends we get another twist played out in quite a pantomime style. As the manager ushers Britney off the platform muttering something weird about shells, he turns to camera and is revealed to have crazy robot eyes. Oh, and there’s that stupidly over-the-top maniacal laugh too; you know, muhahahaha, and all that.

A rather severe case of red eye.

Overall, the “I Wanna Go” video is a pleasingly silly affair with Britney looking great and with a playful air about her, rather than “the lights are on but nobody’s home” chic that has been her default setting recently. While in my personal opinion it’s not the best choice of single, it’ll undoubtedly do well seen as how it’s the Britney Music Machine that, even after her own personal set backs, is still a force to be recommend with (read: exploited to death).
