Bringing his series of ‘Story So Far’ EPs to a close, Mikes Davies – aka Mi’das – releases Stronger. Produced by Mi’das and James Wyatt (Lianne La Havas, Eliza Doolittle) and recorded partly in the famous Abbey Road Studios, it follows in the footsteps of Grow and Glow from winter 2014.
Opening with the rather majestic ‘Wish Road’, the soulfulness of Mi’das’ voice is immediately apparent and draws you in. Quick to follow are the gospel-tinged ‘Too Little Too Late’ and the commercially appealing stomp of ‘Vienna’, which show the Brighton-born artist clearly has an ear for a catchy hook.
The last of the new tracks, ‘Like You Did Then’ is sadly a little forgettable with its mellow Damien Rice vibe, but the Otis Porter remix of ‘Wish Road’ redeems things by bringing an unexpected but welcome contemporary flourish to the EP. Perhaps the only superfluous track is the radio edit of the aforementioned ‘Vienna’, which is tagged on at the end and isn’t drastically different from the original to really warrant inclusion.
Nevertheless, with a sound that blends the soulful vocals stylings of Conner Reeves with some of the rockier songwriter vibes of Justin Nozuka, Mi’das’ latest EP is an enjoyable and pleasantly melodic collection, and it’ll certainly be interesting to see where he goes next now this project has come to an end.
